I probably love this movie too much.
Arrietty was playful, but had a deeper plot than Ponyo, which I wholly appreciated. It was closer to Howl’s Moving Castle in terms of having a deeper, and surprisingly dark undertone. Not quite as overt of a love story as Howl’s, and not quite as dark either, but it had a better balance of the two. The very particular pacing of Miyazaki movies has its pros and cons (I had to watch Mononoke in two parts because the pacing felt too stretched), but now it feels like Miyazaki has a better grasp on how to reveal a plot twist, at the very least. It may have been Disney’s intervention, it may not have been, but I prefer the change either way.
Throughout all this, Arrietty still had that Miyazaki whimsy that is so pervasive in all of his films. It was cute, it was sad (I honestly cried), and as usual, it was stunningly beautiful. Well done, sir.
